New 445 Horsepower Heavy-Duty Duramax Engine From GM

GMC has now taken the Duramax engine to new heights with the release of the new 6.6L L5P Duramax turbo-diesel V-8 engine destined for GMC’s 2017 model year heavy-duty pickup trucks; including the new 2017 GMC Sierra HD. The redesigned Duramax engine offers more torque and horsepower than ever before, enabling easier trailering and hauling. 

The new 6.6L L5P Duramax turbo-diesel V-8 engine will pump out 445 horses and 910 pound-feet of torque! That’s a 19% increase in max torque over the outgoing Duramax 6.6L! Along with greater torque and more horsepower, the redesigned turbo-diesel Duramax engine is also much quieter. In fact, engine noise, at idle, is reduced 38%. 

The impressive power of the new Duramax engine wouldn’t be possible without the proper amount of air intake. The engineers at GMC have created a new, patent-pending vehicle air intake system that drives cool, dry air into the engine for sustained performance. Cooler air helps the engine run better, especially in conditions where engine and transmission temperatures can rise quickly. That allows the Duramax to maintain more power and vehicle speed when trailering in the toughest conditions. 

The new intake design is distinguished on the 2017 GMC Sierra HD, by a bold hood scoop, and is another example of the advanced integration included in the 2017 Sierra HD that makes it over-the-road capable.

The new Duramax 6.6L is matched with the Allison 1000 six-speed automatic transmission. The transmission has undergone several refinements to accommodate for the new engine’s higher torque capacity, including a new torque converter. The Allison 1000’s Tow/Haul mode reduces shift cycling for improved cooling and better control when towing or hauling heavy loads. 

A new, smart diesel exhaust-brake feature enhances control when descending steep grades. The integrated exhaust-brake system makes trailering less stressful by creating additional backpressure in the exhaust, resulting in negative torque during deceleration and downhill driving, enhancing driver control and prolonging brake pad life. A new electronically controlled, variable-vane turbocharger helps the engine make more power, and revisions to enhance the capability of the exhaust-brake system.

How big of a distinction is the Mark of Excellence award? Well, out of GM’s approximately 4,300 Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac dealerships across the United States, only 301 dealerships received the Mark of Excellence award. In the south central region, which encompasses the Tulsa area, Oklahoma, and other surrounding states, Ferguson Buick GMC received 1 of only 9 Mark of Excellence awards presented. 

Along with the Mark of Excellence Award, a few of our Buick, GMC employees were honored as well for their commitment to customer service and outstanding performance.

New Quality Study has Two GM Brands in Top Five

JD Power & Associates new Initial Quality Study has GM vehicles placed with having the most segment leaders in quality.

General Motors’ quality has impressed during this year’s JD Power & Associates 2013 Initial Quality Study (IQS).

The annual survey looks at owner-reported problems in the first 90 days of new-vehicle ownership, this score is based on problems that have caused a complete breakdown or malfunction, or where controls or features may work as designed, but are difficult to use or understand.

GMC and Chevrolet were the only nonluxury brands ranked in the top five. According to the study, GMC was crowned the top-ranked non-premium brand at 90 problems per 100 vehicles, and second overall in the study, trailing only Porsche (80 problems per 100 vehicles). Lexus was third.

All GM brands finished above industry average. In addition to No. 2 GMC and No. 5 Chevrolet, Cadillac tied for 13th and Buick tied for No. 15.

"GM has the best quality of any corporation in the study, the first time it's been on top," said David Sargent, Power vice president of global automotive and the study's author. "GM is obsessed with quality...It's like a mission. They're just rabid about quality."

2014 GMC Sierra 1500 - Aerodynamic Wind Testing

In our last blog post we mentioned we couldn’t be more excited about the release of the new 2014 GMC Sierra 1500, here at Ferguson Buick GMC. That being said, we were compelled to write another blog post about; yep, that’s right, you guessed it, the 2014 GMC Sierra. It’s going to be one beautiful truck!

We mentioned in our last post that the GMC Sierra has been through over 7,000,000 miles of accumulated rigorous testing before its launch. Aerodynamic testing was one major test applied to the new Sierra. According to GM, the 2014 GMC Sierra went through more aerodynamic wind testing than any previous pickup for the brand.

Aerodynamic functionality has been a major design process for automakers; especially in the last couple of decades. With gas prices rising, people have become more concerned about fuel efficiency than ever before; while at the same time, truck owners want pickups with more towing capacity and more torque. Reducing wind drag is one of the best methods of getting the best of both worlds. "For a full-size truck, a change in drag coefficient of 0.01 is approximately equal to an improvement in fuel economy of 0.1 mpg on the combined city/highway driving cycle," says GM's Schenkel. "The same drag coefficient reduction can improve a car's fuel economy by approximately 0.2 mpg."

To study the way air passes over, under and around the Sierra, engineers used GM’s state-of-the-art aerodynamics lab, a 750-foot-long tunnel through which a 43-foot-diameter fan to generate winds of up to 138 miles per hour.

Here’s a look at some of GM’s new features and findings from its extensive wind tunnel testing on the new Sierra:

• A new air dam below the 2014 Sierra’s front bumper successfully reduces drag because it directs air toward the ground and away from the truck’s rough underbody.
• Ducted flow path between the grille and radiator prevents air from swirling inside the truck’s front cavities.
• The Sierra’s tailgate and the center high-mounted stop light are optimized to guide air cleanly around the truck. And new sealing in the cab and bed also help.
• GM found trucks achieve better fuel efficiency with the tailgate up. As air flows over the truck, it falls over the cab and pushes forward on the rear of the truck. With the tailgate down, the benefits of that airflow are diminished.

The entire truck’s design needs to be considered in order to determine how aerodynamic it actually is. According to Diane Bloch, GM aerodynamic performance engineer, “The biggest misconception is that it’s all about single components. But a certain side mirror design doesn’t create a certain amount of drag, its interaction with the rest of the vehicle does.”

Another misconception people often have about their truck is - removing the tailgate, or replacing it with a cargo reduces drag and increases fuel efficiency. Driving with the tailgate closed actually results in airflow "pushing" on the back of the cab, a desirable airflow characteristic. “Replacing the tailgate with an aftermarket net is worse than having no tailgate at all,” Bloch said. It is like dragging fishing net through water.

   

Both the 2014 Chevy Silverado and the 2014 GMC Sierra will be on dealership lots within months. Aerodynamic advancement, according to GM, is one reason why the 2014 Sierra will be the most fuel-efficient V8 pickup on the market. GM released pricing for the 2014 Sierra; MSRP will be set at $25,085.

GM Continues to "Go Green"

Oklahoma has seen some strange weather in the last couple months; breaking records for having freezing temperatures at the latest point in the year. According to a study by Yale Project on Climate Change, “More than half of Americans now blame climate change for the extreme weather of recent years.” GM is making commitments to reduce climate change, and better the future of our planet. The company is not only talking about going green, they are taking action. GM became the first car company to sign the Climate Declaration. The declaration aims to create a co-ordinated effort to combat climate change. The Climate Declaration was organized by Ceres. Ceres is an advocate for sustainability leadership, and who's mission is to mobilizing investor and business leadership to build a thriving, sustainable global economy.

The Declaration has been signed by over 40 companies, including GM. Ben & Jerry's, Intel, and Starbucks are among the other companies to have signed. GM has been urgering President Obama and his administration to adopt a national energy policy even before signing the declaration. “Every day our 200,000-plus GM employees around the world are working to improve the sustainability of our vehicles and the plants that build them. We believe our efforts are making a difference, and clear policies will help drive carbon emissions even lower,” said Michael J. Robinson, GM’s vice president of sustainability and global regulatory affairs. The auto maker also operates two of the world's largest solar power arrays. GM has also made strides to go green at threy world headquarter building, the Renaissance Center, in Detroit Michigan. The building provides access to cost-effective, environmentally sensitive supplies and services, and offers a recycling program for offices.
