In July 1969, Neil Armstrong rode a rocket to the moon with a computer that had less technology than today's modern smartphones. Fast forward 44 years later and we are on the verge of driving our cars down the rode with a built in Wi-Fi hot spot. On February 25, 2013 General Motors announced that they would be teaming up with AT&T to launch a new generation of connected cars that will have built-in 4G LTE mobile; making most GM vehicles become rolling mobile devices. That is one giant step for technology development in the auto industry.
Some cool features that the built in 4G LTE broadband will provide include:
- Security cameras accessible through your mobile device
- Live streaming TV
- Faster real-time apps
- More interactive voice and data service, which in turn provides an enhanced interaction with OnStar
- Enhanced safety features
- Skype video conference calls
- Along with these features, GM is anticipating that the built-in 4G LTE will be attractive to third-party engineers and developers to create new in-vehicle applications for GM customers.
GM will begin working with AT&T Inc. by mid-2014. Most 2015 GM vehicles will be equipped with 4G LTE broadband by 2015 in North America.
